2) Lung Disease -Smoker's Cough and Asthma, UnderstandingMedications for Lung diseases

3) Quitting Smoking using Nicotine Replacement Therapy -Who can help you? Stop before your Heart and Lung suffers.
12.00-12.45pm
Speaker: Ms Tan Sue Kim
Date: 10/06/2006 (SAT)
Venue: Singapore General Hospital (SGH)Specialist Outpatient Clinic (SOC) Pharmacy, Block 3, Level 1
Light Refreshments would be provided.
Abstracts of the various talks is included below:
"Quitting Smoking- Know more about Nicotine Replacement Therapy",Smoking is the most preventable cause of death in the world. Smoking has been associated increased mortality and poor quality of life inboth patients and the ones around them. Thousands of chemicalscontained in a stick of cigarette are hazardous to health and affectmany parts of the body such as the lung, the heart and brain, thus, increases the risk of cancer, heart problems and stroke. NicotineReplacement Therapy (NRT) is considered a viable option to helpsmokers kick off their nicotine addiction which deters from quittingby purely cold turkey method. NRT is the use of various forms of nicotine delivery methods intended to replace nicotine obtained fromsmoking or other tobacco usage. These products are intended for usein smoking cessation efforts to help deal with withdrawal symptomsand cravings or urges. Several forms of NRT have been marketed, including the nicotine patch, inhaler, gum, and lozenges. Researchshows that smokers using NRT were more likely to be abstinent fromsmoking at followup than those using placebo or cold turkey method. This lecture encompasses the general information to build patients' awareness in the hazards of smoking. This lecture will also coverthe correct techniques and safe usage of using NRT in order tomaximise its benefits. In addition, basic steps to help patientsquitting smoking will also be discussed.
"Lung Disease-Asthma and Smoker's Cough
"The talk will look at the more common lung diseases such as asthmaand chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and the causes for theseconditions.
The talk will also look at the various modes of treatment of these conditions and focus on the medical treatment forthem.
It is hoped that after the talk, the audience will be able tobetter appreciate the different types of lung diseases and how thesecan and are presently being treated.
"Heart Disease-knowing more about your medications".
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) or heart disease is not a singledisease or condition. Collectively, it is a group of different disorders that affect your heart and or the blood vessels orvascular system. These abnormalities may be caused by degenerativechanges in the blood vessels, extraneous infections, or congenitaldefects. Common types of cardiovascular disease include:
Atherosclerosis,
Hypertension,
Coronary Heart Disease, frequently accompanied by angina,
Heart Attack,
Stroke,
Heart failure,
Congenital Heart Disease,
Arrhythmias.
Heart disease is the second top killer in Singapore, accounting for 25% of our total deaths in the year 2000.
According to Ministry of Health's 2004 statistics, heart disease(ischaemic heart disease) is ranked third most common reason forhospitalization, after cancer. Many heart patients return home after being discharged from hospitals but continuing care e.g.medications, changes in lifestyle, diet and managing stress isnecessary to better manage their heart conditions.
The principal causes of death due to heart diseases are rank number sixth killer in Singapore in 2004, as reported in Health FactsSingapore 2005.
Medications form the integral part of cardiovascular medicine ofheart disease management and together with lifestyle modifications and various treatment modalities; one can reduce the risk of a firstor repeat heart events that can be detrimental to health. Multiple medications are often needed to control symptoms and risk factors. Therefore, a better understanding of current medications you are consuming may assist in better managing of disease condition andwhich may translate into better quality of life.
Please do not hesitate to revert back to hotline 63213521 (Audrey)or 63214110 (MingChai) or email pharmacist_public_education@yahoo.com.sg for registration or shouldyou have any enquires. As seats are limited, please rsvp by 30 May.Thank you very much.

I am a growing a glorious garden
[Jack Prelutsky]
I am growing a glorious garden,<>
Resplendent with trumpet and flutes,>
I’m pruning euphonium bushes,
I am watering piccolo shoots,
my tubas and tambourines flourish,
Surrounded by saxophone reeds,
I am planting trombones and pianos,
And sowing sweet sousaphone seeds.
<>Staid oboes in orderly rows,
>There are flowering fifes and violas
In the glade where the glockenspiel grows,
There are gongs and guitars in abundance,
There are violins high in the vine,
An arbor of harps by the bower
Where the cellos and clarinets twine. <>
My bassoons are beginning to blossom,>
As my zithers and mandolins bloom,
My castanets happily chatter,
My kettledrums merrily boom,
The banjos that branch by the bugles
Play counterpoint with a kazoo,
Come visit my glorious garden
And hear it play music for you.

Events!
Haha.. I realised that some don't know about this.. So might as well blog about it. So that all can see too!
---------------------------------------------------------------------
The SINDA gig. Here's the details.
Event : Volunteers' Tea 2006
Date: 21st May 2006 (Sunday)
Venue : Suntec City, Convention Centre
Time: Performance would be anytime between 3- 4.30 pm
We are looking out for :
Item: NUS Winds Symphony performance
No. of Performers: min 10 to max 30 (Formal attire, the InTempo one, except guys no need wear blazer).
Duration: 5 - 10 minutes ( Please let us know of the more appropriate
timing for you)
Theme of Item: On the spirit of volunteerism & on the spirit of giving (confirmed "That's what friends are for" and "Stand by me").
Note: It's not confirmed yet. Just to let you all know only....
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Ok, got one more, Commencement.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Commencement C1, 6 July
OCR has confirmed NUS Wind Symphony to play the fannfares and pieces before C1 just like they do every year. Fanfare is for Honorary Graduand and President Nathan. The former is going to be a very high profile person so a bomb sweep and pre-dawn arrival of WS might be in order that day.
I have already communicated to them that a platform and tentage with fans must be set up at the driveway (remind students to bring clips for their scores or the fans will make the scores fly).
Reporting time to be confirmed as there might be bomb sweep in the morning which means the students need to come in much earlier ( we will reimburse them cab fare if so)
WS to confirm no of chairs/music stands/conductor's stand and platform and arrange for transport. Double confirm with BH if Tony will be given an honorarium.
-Ms Tara Beh Shu-Sienn
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah, just to keep you all updated!
Study hard ah, everyone!

I am going to throw away the alarm clock.
It woke me up @ the wrong time.
Some late nite contributions...
I realised I posted in the wrong blog for the following clip,

Had wanted to post in another blog.
But nvm... went ahead with it.
Early nitez all~~~ =)
I shan't say much.
This is a very sad clip.
I wept for him over dinner.
NUS student checked his results online,
& realised he did not get cap 5 for the semester.

Derek
U guys know it.
Derek is my best junior.
I made him do the most push-ups back then.
And I felt a great sense of satisfaction.
Because those 200 push-ups changed his life for the better ever since.
2 nites ago I dreamt of Derek.
Last nite I dream of Derek again.
That woke me up in cold sweat.
Instead of refreshing nusws.blogspot.com
like what some crazy pple have been doing @ 3am 4am,
I checked out this site after reading RongC's blog.
I placed Derek's photo.
God.
He looks damn manly with his golden tuba.
I bet this pic will turn any girl on.

So Derek shares the same facial features as that guy.

Wah lau really resembles a lil'.
AwwLeonDerek Lai....
Sing me 甜密密 pls.
I'm willing to ride on your bicycle.
Let's take a tour around NUS,
everytime before band pract starts.

往者不可谏,来者犹可追
很多人都已经明白这个道理。为什么还有那么多人拼命地批评?为何不给解决方案?过去的已经不能再改变了。只好吸取今年的教训,用心专心地搞好下一次的演出。

Advice to Critics of Concert
To all people who wish to criticise a band performance (and wish to be taken seriously):
1. Please get the type of the group performing. The NUS Wind Symphony did not "market itself" as a "winds orchestra", and it certainly did not pretend "to be serious", even though the posters were rather professionally made.
2. Please get the name of the group performing correctly. The NUS Wind Symphony's name is obvious...it isn't a Wind Orchestra.
3. Please know the repertoire before you even step into the auditorium. If you're not sure, the advertising posters have contacts whom you can call and ask for more details. Don't feel cheated by alleged false marketing (if there indeed was any) if you didn't know what the band was going to perform in the first place. Concerts aren't like Kinder Surprise, except for maybe the encore pieces. No band will ever advertise its concert without giving a run-down of at least a few of its pieces it is going to play for the concert.
What on earth possessed you to think that the all wind orchestras (and indeed, all orchestras of any nature) play only classical music during their concerts anyway? Are you sure you've been in touch with classical music anyway?
4. Please get the order of the repertoire correct. You have the programme list by your side. What piece comes after what piece would be clearly listed in the programme booklet. The piece after the trombone concerto was not the "ridiculous 'big-band' sounding amateurish piece", but the piece based on a Biblical story (and an encore piece by the SSO guest trombonist before that if you really want to get to specifics). Not getting even the repertoire correct makes you sound as if you are out to make your blog a flame bait for people from the band.
5. Please do your research on whichever instrumentalist you criticize. If you want to criticize a "joker" for allegedly spoiling a solo segment, you don't straightaway assume that he is a "histrionic" student "from NUS" when people in the know can tell you that he isn't even an NUS undergraduate.
6. Please do keep your aural skills on high alert. An oboe solo is an oboe solo; you should not make a boo-boo like calling an oboe solo a "cor anglais" solo when you had just stated your admiration for the music of Brahms, Mozart and Tchaikovsky, and were lambasting band music as "brainless". You make yourself sound foolish, no matter how many valid points you make on how the band sounded...and you did make some sound remarks.

The piece after the trombone concerto was not the "ridiculous 'big-band' sounding amateurish piece", but the piece based on a Biblical story (and an encore piece by the SSO guest trombonist before that if you really want to get to specifics). this blog is made as a spyware to track who's the band member who sleeps the latest.
haha.. ermz tink ppl can juz comment, up to us whether we wan to improve. it's alw easier to criticise than to commend. so, up till now, i stil had not heard of any good comments yet. it's alw crticisms that comes out from ppl who wants to compare us with professional without realising that we're actually students. I keep thinking: "why compare us to fredi???" I believe that the main band sounds OKAY in Colors. (To concert goer, have u listened to the professional recording? i think the band is roughly 70% of that standard) I noe it's normal to have high expectations for a concert, but really, from all the bad comments, I think ppl have been really mean and say things without going through their big brain. I guess I dunnit to elaborate.
To those non-NUSWS ppl who wrote bad comments abt soloist, i've nothing to say but to ask "have u played a solo before? u sure u wun play it badly on concert day? so confident ah? confirm no stage fright?"
But of course, there're definitely flaws in our concert which I hope we can work on as all of u know there'll be some big changes happening to the band. So... dun be too demoralised by all those bad comments (since there're practically no good ones from non-NUSWS ppl), work hard, and dun be too complacent too.
To the new comm, I guess u all shd noe it's THE time to change things in this band.
To non-NUSWS ppl, wait and see lo... InTempo 07...
(I think i should like i wan to fight, sorry, but really... this is wat i feel la)
